This study aimed update costs and revenues to study the economic viability of raising calves on the Western Border of Rio Grande do Sul. The results will enable calf producers in the Brazilian Far South to analyze their production systems and the viability of technologies that can improve their production rates, aiming for the sustainability of their production unit in the medium and long term. The study was based on studies that mapped calf production in the Western Frontier of Rio Grande do Sul, combined with indicators of currency adjustment for inflation (IGP-M), workers' compensation, and the dollar. The results showed negative results for the cattle-calf activity, with high fixed costs, representing almost two-thirds of the total cost. Land leasing was the largest fixed cost, while wages and expenses were the largest variable cost, accounting for nearly 10% of the total cost (9.4% adjusted for the national currency and 9.9% adjusted for the dollar). The cost of calf production in the Western Border of Rio Grande do Sul reaches 56 kg/year/ha of total area or 70 kg/year/ha of pastoral area, representing, in all forms of correction, a loss for the activity if depreciation of the production structure and the return on capital invested in the activity are taken into account. Thus, it can be inferred that the correction of the values paid for products from calf production are out of step with the production costs borne by the ranchers of these businesses.
