REFLECTIONS OF COVID-19 ON THE COSTS MANAGEMENT OF A PRIVATE HOSPITAL

Abstract

With the emergence of Covid-19 and its worldwide spread, the health system around the world was destabilized due to the high demand for care and new hospital adaptations, a fact that generated the need for unexpected financial contributions in order to maintain the functioning of this sector. Given this, the present work aimed to analyze the effects that the Covid-19 pandemic caused on the costs of a hospital unit located in the region of Triângulo Mineiro, state of Minas Gerais. In order to reach the proposed objective, a descriptive research was carried out, with a quantitative-qualitative approach. Data were obtained from Income Statements (DRE), detailed management reports and also through a structured interview with the hospital’s financial manager. It was possible to verify a considerable increase in the institution’s costs during the analyzed period, in addition, there was also an increase in the number of monthly consultations and, consequently, in revenue. However, due to hospitalizations caused by Covid-19 being more costly for the hospital entity compared to other respiratory diseases, hospital costs were higher than revenues at the end of the analyzed period. In relation to related studies, it was possible to verify the interviewee’s agreement with the statements presented about the management of hospital costs. In view of the results found, it is suggested that the Covid-19 pandemic caused significant effects on the costs of the analyzed institution.
