Abstract

Enterprise organizations interact with the environment and with society in a complete form. According to Systems Theory, the firm is considered an open and dynamic system. This interaction influences people, contributes for the increase in its standards of living and for the development of society as a whole. Within this point of view, this study aimed to describe the social and environmental positioning adopted by organizations. For its achievement, a briefing theoretical framework was developed covering the following themes: organization and its environment, organizational sustainability, and corporate social actions. An exploratory research employing interviews was carried through with the managers of three firms of the metal-mechanic industry, located in the Region the Northwest of the State of the Rio Grande do Sul. The findings indicate that firms incorporated environment management as part of their business, as well as disclosed an ethically responsible social behavior.
